Through a series of fragments and episodic scenes, this short documentary film explores the culture of a small village enclave in Lisbon through the interactions that take place between locals in a public laundry space.
Shot entirely in the interior of one of the last remaining public laundry spaces in the historic neighborhood of Alfama, Lavandaria Publica documents the surviving tradition of hand washing through a portrait of Maria da Luz - a strong willed and meticulous woman who is among the few left to carry forward this long-standing practice.
